My fingers burned when I dropped the pen to the book. Those words bled out of me and onto the page. My skin buzzed and my throat was sandy dry. I stared at the poem that just ripped from my soul and pushed out a breath. I had to figure out what I wanted to do about my relationship with Jay.
But right then? I just wanted to lay beside her and breathe in her smell. I wanted to hold her and feel her solid weight in my arms. I deserved that much if nothing else.

âTwo new hires showed up this morning, so I need you to put them in the system then show them how to use it. Umâ¦â I glanced down at my iPad then back at Dash. He was helping out at the truck depot as payment for getting my trunk bloody. âThe shorter girl, Nori, sheâs going to make the dispatch calls. Her resume said sheâs proficient in our call system, but she looks a little young. Sheâs probably full of shit and just needs a job. Show her how to work the phones.â
âWhy the fuck you hire her if you donât think she knows what sheâs doing, Pretty Boy?â he asked, already annoyed that he had to come work off his debt.
âBecause chances are, if she has something to hide then she wonât bitch about all the things we have to hide. People who want to hide usually keep to themselves and mind their fucking business. Perfect for us.â
âOkayâ¦whatever. If she robs you blind, donât say shit,â Dash huffed, walking into the small office where I had one of the new hires sitting. âGoddamn, Pretty Boy, what kind of plug-in you got on in here? That shit smells good. Got my fucking stomach growling.â He walked all the way in and paused in his rambling, staring at the petite, brown skin woman sitting at the desk.
âI donât use plug-ins in the office,â I told him with a frown.
âOh shitâ¦then it must be you. Whatâs your name?â Dash smiled at her, and she looked at him like sheâd never been more unimpressed.
âThis is Nori,â I said, stifling a laugh at Dashâs broken face. âIâm sorry; I forgot your last name, sweetheart.â When I looked at her and smiled, she perked up, flashing a grin at me.
âSaunders, Mr. Langston,â she answered in a soft voice.
âThank you, Miss Saunders.â I looked at Dash and sighed. âThis is my little brotherââ
âThis nigga is one year older than me. Whatâs up, Nori? Iâm Big Dashâ he rubbed his hands together and licked his lips, but Nori still remained unbothered as fuck.
âNo the fuck youâre not. Weâre not doing King business right now.â I spoke from between gritted teeth and Dash huffed in response.
âMy bad, Mr. Langston. Sorry about that, Miss Saunders. My name is Asher Quick.â Dash was so fucking arrogant it gave me a damn headache. It was like dealing with an immature version of King.
He held out his hand for Noriâs, but she ignored him and looked at me.
